Female Mummy: Look at
Her Eyes!

Archaeologists have pulled a totally intact female mummy out of a tomb in the ruins of Peru 's Huaca Pucllana near Lima . The mummy, which is thought to be from the ancient Wari culture that flourished before the Incas, dates from about 700 AD. "We'd discovered other tombs before," Isabel Flores, director of the ruins, explained to Reuters. "But they always had holes or were damaged. Never had we found a whole tomb like this one--intact." Before the mummy was
carefully wrapped in tissue paper and lifted onto a flat wooden board, the
archaeological team exposed her face
to reveal two big, bright blue orbs stuffed into her eye sockets. "Her face startled me at first," Miguel Angel, 19, a worker at Huaca Pucllana who helped unearth the tomb, told Reuters. "I wasn’t expecting to find anything like that." It's not known what the fake eyes are made of. Living in between 600 A.D. and 1100 A.D., the Wari people settled near what is now Ayacucho in the Andes , but they traveled widely and are known for their extensive network of roads. About 30 tombs have been found at Huaca Pucllana, which is surrounded by the busy streets of Lima. The tombs are easily identified--when they are in good condition--by the ceramic and textile offerings that are placed around the dead. Since children were often sacrificed in this ancient culture, their small bodies have been found alongside those of adults. At Huaca Pucllana several adult mummies have been found, as well as that of a child, who was likely a sacrificial victim. |
